Friends! I have recently started a new Instagram profile and opened an online shop - I am selling prints of my (slightly weird) collage work! And I'm super excited about it! (Can you tell by all the exclamation points?!)
I started making these little pieces of bright, colourful fun over the winter. I was feeling like a was getting way too much 'screen time' and I had a major urge to do something with my hands. I didn't think too much about it, I just started cutting up my stacks and stacks of old magazines.
Around the same time, I had a collection of black and white nude vignettes in a little gallery show I did with the Artists of Elk Run at the Hive Gallery in my home town, Canmore, AB.
I love how these look in this classic form - I'm still proud of them - but even so, I decided to take the scissors to them.
Letting my decisions and my process be super spontaneous, fairly quick, and very lighthearted, this is what ended up happening:
..and then these...
I put all of the collages together analogue-stylez - good ol' scissors and glue. (This is now what my dining table looks like on a pretty regular basis.)
And then I photograph each collage and bring it into Photoshop so that I can draw on top of it. The white marks that you see are my digital drawings. Because I like to doodle.
I am printing the finished pieces on beautiful art paper by Epson - it's thick and matte and sooo pretty.
I ended up showing these in another small gallery show in March, and they were met with encouragingly positive response (read: some of them actually sold, WHAAAT?) In light of that warm reception of these pieces, I decided to start a little side-biz.
The Flying Skirt Printshop has been up and running for a couple of weeks, mainly just over on Instagram (guys, did you know that people are buying art on Instagram? So rad.) So far, I have sold a few pieces and shipped them off to Texas, Oregon, and BC. I am just tickled every time someone likes one of these. They're so outside my usual comfort zone - boldly colourful and pretty silly, which I love.
I'm posting new pieces as often as possible. They don't always have my own photography as an element; sometimes they are magazine clippings and digital scribbles only, like these, below, and the ones up at the top of this post.
I'd love it if you'd follow along with me here and if you ever see a piece that is begging to be on your wall, don't be shy!
Thanks for checking in, people!
Big hugs.
